Rear crank seal install depth? 700 1988

I have my rear seal carrier out and will replace the rear seal tonight. Question about how deep to recess it in the carrier. Haynes says if there is any wear on the crank, (there is a little) recess the new seal farther than the one replaced.

The old one isn't even pressed in flush with the carrier but stands above it by about 2mm. I wasn't worried about this until reading the FAQ where it states that excessive crankcase pressure, in addition to causing seals to leak, can push a seal out.

Has anyone else found a rear seal not fully pressed into it's carrier?

I'll be checking the vent system and oil trap next. BTW, it's a turbo so there shouldn't be a flame trap.

Thanks,
