I have a Volvo 940GLE Turbo. Recently we had a leak coming from the engine which I traced to the Water pump area. I have removed the old pump and the cause of the problem is the metal pipe which goes into the back of the pump.
The shouldered end which presses into the pump with a rubber seal is almost completely corroded away.

This is the pipe which runs from behind the back of the engine (near the distributor, along the side of the engine via another junction which cools the oil filter housing underneath the exhaust manifold and then on to the water pump.
There seems to be no way at all of removing this pipe. I have been working on the car today, and have spent 8 hours getting nowhere. The old pump is off, the manifold is off, and there is still a bracket which is quite impossible to get to.
Short of removing the engine is there any way to deal with this and get the pipe out? Obviously I could cut it out, but then I still have to get the new one back.
My only idea at the moment is to get hold of a new pipe, cut off a few inches to get the water pump end, do the same on the old pipe and then join the two with a hose and two clamps.
Can anybody help with this please? I have to say that whoever designed this at Volvo didn't give much thought to getting it out to replace it and it is a fairly basic part after all.
