Exterior trim polishing 700 1989

I have a cosmetic question. What exactly is the exterior trim made of in the earlier 740 models? Is it chrome or aluminium? This is not the black trim like on the 940. This is the metal one that runs on the side of the roof. Also found on the lower edge of the windows and around the windscreen.

I've tried polishing it with Autosol polish for chrome/aluminium but it's not having the desired effect. It's quite dull ? oxidised and maybe I'm using a wrong polish.

Anyone else had luck polishing their trims? What's the best way for restoring it to its former shine?
