Fluctuating temp. gauge - '86 240DL 200 1986

I'm looking to buy a 1986 240 DL sedan, 140,000 miles. Engine seems sound, but during test drive the temperature gauge was fluctuating quite a bit. Water pump was replaced two years ago. Is this a major concern, or something as simple as a faulty temperature sensor?
