965 vs 945T 900

I'm curious what the thoughts are on comparing the 945Turbos with the 965. I am hoping to trade my 855T for one or the other in the fairly near future, i.e. before it bends in half over a Pennsylvania pothole.
That said, I like the extra power both have over the 940s. The 965 seems like both the last of the RWD series and the first of the FWD. By that, it seems to take some of the strengths of the RWD building experience and then toss it into what seems the muck of cushier/expensive electronica that later cars like the 850s posess. I like the furnishings of the 960, it's basically very comfortable, though I can do with a fraction of the gizmos. The 940 seems pretty spartan all in all. Both 940 and 960 seem to be way more substantial than the 850.
So the questions, I have basically comes down to these. Is the understanding of the 960 as a hybrid RWD + FWD cush in any way accurate? And, what will be more reliable/durable over the long haul. Will the 6cyl, n/a engine be more straightforward than the 4 with a turbo? Is there anything on either car that a novice who wants to learn can work on?
Certain things being equal (low miles, cared for, not lemon, rust free) and money being scarce, which would you buy?
Sorry for the length of the "question" but I offer it as it seems others out there are wondering along similar veins too.
--don't want to screw up like I did with the 850,
