First Time Post -- 91 940se rear nivomat removal procedure?

Hello All,

My name is Dan, and I have inherited my dad's 91 940se, IRS rear suspension w/nivomats. It has good history in the family, and I refuse to let my Ma junk it -- Besides, it just a baby -- only 140K on the clock.

My main mission for sat morning is to remove and assess why the rear end is sagging on both sides. (I also plan to take digital pics as I complete the procedure and post them) I have lurked here for some time, and I have a pretty good idea that the dreaded nivo's are the cause. I have turned a wrench or two, mostly on VW's, and I am spoiled by the far greater amount of technical literature out there for VW's. (I was hoping for a Bentley on the 940-no luck)

Anyway, I would appreciate any help in the following areas...

A few questions:

1) any other diagnostic clues as to whether the nivomat has lost its ability to spring?

2) anyone wish to describe the process of removing the shocks? I have seen conflicting info here and elsewhere.

3) Can I gain access to the top nut from the rear wheel well?

Thanks for any respone.

-Dan C.
