another quick question 200 1984

ok, while doing the alt. i was able to inspect the torn boot on the drivers side, and it doesnt look too great, inside is semi rusty though not pitted, the ball joint in there is rusty and the general thing kind of freaks me out. is there any way to replace just the joint in there without a new steering rack? can i just sort of spray some wd40 and then grease it and hope for the best? what do you guys suggest i do. this is going to be a highway car, and i really dont want to lose control of the car when that joint gives up. its an 84.5 245ti
