As promised in an earlier post here is my report on the feasibility of installing a vinyl headliner rather than the crappy original fuzz: Bought 2yards of alight tanvinyl with a thin feltlike backing at a Jo Ann fabric store(this is a chain)at $6.99/ yard.
On the first attempt I just glued the vinyl to the cardboard with 3M super77 spray adhesive. This turned out to be a mistakebecause every imperfection in the cardboard showed thru in the vinyl.
Back to Jo Ann's for two more yards. Also bought 2 yards of 1/4" batting material on sale for $.99/yard. Trying to remove the first mistake from the cardboard was hard, the 3M glue is very good !
On the next try I first glued down the batting in spots and then glued the vinyl AROUND THE EDGES ONLY. I ended the batting at the at the depressions for the sunvisors and glued down the vinyl in the depressions. To hold down the vinyl in the rear depression I used 4 black 11/16 dia. hood pad plastic buttons, (any size will do ,available at autosupply stores)one in each corner. Used a 3/16 holepunch to make holes thru the vinyl and cardboard for them and a back-up of thin plastic or metal in the back or they will slip out of the cardboard. Cut off excess length.
There will be some wrinkles in the corners but they look rather elegant like like the wrinkles in fine Italian leather seats or furniture. Also used 4 more buttons in a square pattern between the depression and the sunroof to hold the vinyl up. the end result looks great with a slight billowy look and is washable !! Costs were less than $20 plus the glue and my time. Easily a Saturday job if you have a good cardboard backing.
