Engine swap for 1970 145. What can fit?

First, I am interested in more power, not ultimate power. I have a '67 Dodge Coronet for that. I will consider other engines than Volvo, but would like to keep complications to a minimum and want an overdrive.

This is my first Volvo since 1972 so I may be slow on the nomenclature. A few questions. Although I am not opposed to an automatic, I understand the electric overdrive used by Volvo is derived from a Laycock patent and is similar to the Gear Vendors unit I had in my Dodge. That would take 500 hp, so I was favorably impressed.

Now to business, I understand that the fender intrusion on my 145 militates against a V8, so how "bolt in" are the later Volvo 4's? I would consider a turbo if I am not going to make myself crazy.

Are there any V-6 kits available. It is now Octoner and my barn is unheated, I am not up for a long term project.

If I don't get to the swap this year, I at least need an overdrive. I understand that there is a common retrofit, can someone give me the particulars.

All responses appreciated.
Tom Faust
