Hi,
I recently replaced my power steering pump as it was making a lot of noise and the steering was stiff at low speeds and idle. I installed a rebuilt pump which appears to work fine and is much quieter.
Problem is the steering is as about as stiff.
Stiff when first starting up when it's cool outside
Stiff at slow speed, turning corners or at idle
Less stiff at 30mph and up
Steering wheel hesitates to come back to center line after a turn
The car has 176,000 miles and the equipment is probably original.
I am not a mechanic but am able to repair many automotive things in the past.
If it is the "steering rack", how big of a job is it to replace?
Is it accessible without having to tear apart the whole underside of the car!
Do racks come with all the boots, seals, etc required to do a complete replacement non-stop....nothing worse than having to stop and go get another part.
Any suggestions as to who carries good quality remanufactured assemblies?
Thanks,
Greg in Wichita
