Winter driving with 240 wagon 200 1986

I've been warned that my new (1986, 190k) 240 wagon with a manual transmission is going to be a squirely drive this winter in Iowa. Winter driving conditions here can be ice, snow, rain and a mix of all three. My set of wheels before I got this wagon was a 1985 Dodge 350 Maxi-Van and I can't believe that the Volvo wagon can be any trickier to drive. I'm fortunate that it is not imperitive for me to drive in bad road conditions and usually there are three or four times in the winter when I look out my window and decide to stay put until the bad conditions pass. I'm planning to add two or three sand tubes in the back and I really can't spring for a set of snow tires.
