740 Turbo Fuel Pump Runs Constantly 700 1986

I have a 1986 740Turbo Wagon w/283,000 miles. Car starts immediately and runs fine. I've owned it since new. Main fuel pump has begun running continuously. Swapped out the fuel relay... no change. Is it likely that the in tank pre-pump is history, forcing the main pump to work full time...? The pump even continues to run for a few full seconds after the engine is off... Thx!
