FPR vacume smell: how strong? 700

In trying to check the FPR I pulled off the vacume hose end and could smell a very faint trace of gas. My question is how strong would the smell be if the FPR diaphram was bad? I am smelling gas from the FPR or is there some residual smell from the Throttle Manifold the vacume line goes to? Thanks for the help.
