fuel problem? 200

I'm looking at purchasing an '85 240, of the err, "affordable" variety. In any case, the only major issue I noticed seemed to be fuel related: a "hunting" or surging under acceleration, and power tapering off with rising rpm's. It has sat as long as 6 months recently, which has me wondering about the gasoline varnishing up the filter or pump; the nonfunctional gas guage certainly supports the theory. (maybe, it's still just a theory) I'm not worried about the parts or work involved, but if a lean condition would burn the valves. Burnt valves aren't any fun, I really don't feel like messing with that....
