'Shifter' Boot on Automatic 200 1986

How do I replace the "shifter boot", or gear selector indicator... on an automatic on an '86 244DL? I have no idea how to take the knob and button off, and certainly don't want to damage something that works in a car this old.

I have heard that there was a way without removing the knob, but I don't see it. I want to do this with the minimum of "collateral damage".
