Headrest 'cushions' 200 1989

If you look at the front headrests in 240s from the rear, you'll see that you can see through two open horizontal "bars." In my 244 GL, the front seats have large "cushions" that have a backing that fits into those two bars, holding this headrest "extension" in place. Almost every other 244 I've seen has these "cushions" missing. Are they supposed to be there? Why are they detachable? How easy is it to get new ones?

The back two headrests, on the other hand, are large rectangular cushions that are all one piece.
