Steering rack about to fail? 200

I have a 1992 wagon with 204k miles. That occasional thumping I hear from the front end when I'm parking is the left side end shaft of my steering rack (a CAM rack) starting to get loose in its bushing. It's not leaking, but this can't be good.

Does anyone have a good idea whether this will quickly fail, or can it continue for months or years? And most important--will I have any warning before it does something really stupid like binding up?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Doug Harvey
