Steering coulmn click/clunk on 1995 940 wagon

I have a 1995 940 wagon with 108K on it. The car occassionaly makes a clicking or mild clunking from the steering coulmn sometimes when turning. It seems to do it failry frequently for a while then not do it for a while. Had it checked out by a very reputable Volvo mechanic- mechanic said it was a bearing in the steering column which he adjusted. Replacement was expensive ($500), the mechanic didn't reccommend it because he's never seen one lock up (aparently this problems is common?) so he didn't comsider it a saftey issue.
I've had the car for 1 yr/ 10k miles and its done this since day one without getting any worse. Has any one else had the same issue and what where your results? Thanks in advance.
