Exhaust leak - questions on downpipe 700 1989

Thanks a lot to all those who helped me.
(previous post http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/index.htm?id=701984)

I looked for the the leak during a cold start as suggested and it turned out to be the flanged joint at the downpipe. Unbolted it and gasket looks Ok (just changed last year). Prob a loose bolt I guess from being rear ended recently. Haven't tested my car yet. Anyway I just loosened a bit the connection between the downpipe and the front muffler first (car has no conv) before tightening the bolts at the flange. Hope this is the correct way and would ensure a good contact between at the flange.

I had a flip thru Haynes prior taking out my wrench and quoting it "to remove the downpipe, release the mounting clamp from the bellhousing and separate the joint from the manifold"

I did see some form of rectangular shaped bracket on the downpipe near the
bellhousing with a hole in in the middle. But it's not attached to anything. Am I missing something here? FYI the downpipe has been changed by the PO. Sorry
but I don't any pic.

Thanks as always.
