air-flow no go 200

I recently purchased a 91 240 as is. The car would start via the cold start function, then die. It will run if I disconnect the air flow meter (only at one rpm range) but plugging in the meter will kill it. Bringing up the diagnostic code , I get 1-2-1. indicating a problem to or from the air flow meter. Is this a common problem? Any suggestions?
