240 Auto Transmission 200 1984

My 240 turbo AW 70 or71 (I don't know which, and don't know how to tell) has been acting a bit funny. The car has 275k on the clock, but I think the trans has been out before. When cold, it takes it's time 'catching' when put into gear, but seems to work ok. When it gets good and warm, it momentarily slips at speeds of over 70 mph. Also when warm, reverse is a crap shoot as to when or if it'll work. I have played with the kickdown cable and have adjusted it from not downshifting at all to hair trigger sensitivity and it doesn't seem to make a difference. About 15k miles ago, I repaired the shift linkage from being loose with home made parts and it feels right, but.....?
The fluid and filter have been changed several times, but my Haynes manual is vague on whether to use Ford or Dextron type fluid.
The button on the shifter for OD doesn't work, but I do get all 4 gears. Should I quit trying to save it or is there something I can do to try to correct the problem?
Thanks, Mark
