Wiring for smiths tach (73 ES) 1800

Someone wants to buy a tach I have for a '73 ES. It's the black Smiths one. I need to test it though. We've figured out that the round male and female terminals go to the coil and distributor respectively but there's a 1/4" male spade terminal that is perplexing me. Does this tach need a 12V source to work and would that 1/4" terminal be for +12V. Where would I put 12V- then? to the frame of the tach?

Any pointers would be appreciated.
