DIY catalytic converter inspection 200 1988

I'm changing out the mufflers this weekend ('88, 207K). I don't have any specific reason to suspect that the CC is bad, other than it's a typically gutless 240. I haven't driven enough 240s to know whether it's gutless because of a possible CC problem or just that it's a 240. I do know that we bought it with a bad AMM so theoretically that could have fried the CC. At any rate I can't quite cough up the dough to swap out the CC for no good reason, and since any possible problems aren't extreme I don't want to take it in to a shop. But while I'm changing the mufflers I'd like to know if there's some way of inspecting the CC either visually or other. I don't have anything other than typical weekend warrior tools. No fancy oxygen sensors, etc.

Thanks for all the help and advice.
