Idiot's guide to brakes? 900

A couple of brake questions: (posted earlier, but didn't show up for some reason)

1) After removing the front wheel and trying to figure out which particular pad is needed, I find I can't see a thing through the inspection slot. There is what looks like a metal flap hinged on one side obscuring the view, and after trying with considerable force to move it, I found it does not budge. Should I really give this metal flap some serious torque... or is it spot welded or connected to the brake clips or something? I hate the thought of busting something out of sheer ignorance. (Topic not covered in Haynes)

2) After reading through the FAQ about bleeding the excess fluid out and squeezing the brake lines shut with a clamp, I find that the flexible brake lines on my 8 year old 940 seem too hard for this. They feel about like they're made out of bakelite... and the act of clamping them shut I fear would damage them. Might they be some different kind of brakeline hose?

Thanks for any insights...
