1988 740 turbo sounds like a diesel

My turbo is running ok but it sounds a lot like a diesel (which it isn't). I checked the timing at idle and it looks ok (around 12 degrees btdc), but I am concerned that the sound could be predetonation. Would using a different (cooler range) spark plug help? If so, what plug would you recommend?
