Difficulty Shifting 200 1990

I'm looking at a '90 240 with a manual transmission for my son, however, sometimes getting in to first or second can be a challenge. It has a new clutch and the owner took it to the dealer to see if the problem was related to the clutch. They said no, but that "it needed some shims in the transmission".

Did not see anything in the FAQ about shims. Anyone know? Is this a deal breaker?
