Fuel pumps 900 1992

Hi
I was just wondering in which way the fuelpumps in the 940's pack in. Is it, that they go suddenly, or do they start getting noisy? Likewise, the auxillary pump in the tank-- how do I know, that the thing is working?
My car has now about 160 000 miles down and the fuelpump can be heard running inside the car, when the engine is on idle.
