on custom intakes, must the AMM be retained? 700

i am the proud new owner of a 1986 740GLE. like alot of other car owners, i am unable to leave a great running car alone, and my attention, after cleaning the TB, changing plugs and fluids, turns to improving my car's ability to suck (air).... ;P number one question is: is there any way to bypass that AMM or do i have to keep it when i change the ducting on the intake? and are there any real bits of advice on this endeavor? i have searched the old posts but found nothing of real value in this area.
