Car Stereo Swap 200

Good morning,

My car stereo was recently stolen from my 88 245 GL, and I want to replace it with an original factory stereo from a junkyard. (The best anti-theft device to my knowledge.) I have tryed installing 2 separate Model No. 3165 (non-digital Cassette players), and in both cases the radios did not function properly. The backlight was dead in one stereo, and the volume faded in and out on the other.

Is there a particular model that is more reliable than the others? Is the wiring harness to a lower mounted unit the same as a top mounted unit?

I appreciate your help in advance.
