My '82 245T has occasionally been a little slow to start from cold. My definition of "a little slow" is 5-10 seconds of continual starter engagement. Then it "chuffs" a few times and quiets right down. Running is not affected.
Although it didn't seem to be related to fuel level, I went ahead and replaced my pre-pump and sock. I also replaced the rubber hose on the pre-pump assembly in case it was cracked.
This did not improve the probem so I also replace the fuel filter even though it's not old enough to warrant changing. Still no improvement.
The car has never refused to start, and 90% of the time, it starts fine. Does the "chuffing" or stumbling indicate too much fuel delivered or not enough? The car is not stumbling during the 5-10 second cranking period, it's just not firing. So I assume it's not getting enough fuel. Does this sound like a fuel pump relay going bad?
Any thoughts/ideas appreciated.
