Could a bad stalk cause poor wiper motor troubles? 200 1990

I have to get this wiper problem solved this weekend. I posted about it earlier - The motor was running slow, it would stop suddenly, then start up again - albeit slowly, after a few minutes. I bought a rebuit wiper motor from Autozone - but the same problem remained. Don suggested the rebuilt could've been bad also and that I fix the motor myself, which I will attempt on Sunday. I just want to know all the possible places a problem could develop. I guess the relay only affect the intermittent function? I have the problem at any speed. I mught just get a new stalk and motor from the pick-n-pull - I have a 1990 240DL.
