do i need an alternator or a battery---where s the best place for parts in Van, bc 200

How do you know when the carb is on its last legs and its not just something else?
If the car stalls all the time (recent problem) is hard to start when hot and will start with a jump, does that mean it is the alternator? Should I replace both the alternator and the battery?
