1985 240DL engine dies randomly 200 1985

I'm having problems with my 1985 240DL. The engine dies randomly while driving. If I pull over and crank the engine 10 - 20 times or let it sit for about 15 minutes it'll start again. Each time is a different situation, driving normally, accelerating, starting the car for the frist time of the day, and so on. Any ideas?
