Resetting ECM To Maximize Mileage? 200 1981

I read on another bulletin board (for Ford) that disconnecting the battery, turning on the headlights for 15 minutes to drain the residual charges, then reconnecting the battery and driving on the freeway would reset the ECM and thus maximize mileage? Is this for real?
