What is this hose???? 200

Hi,

I already posted this, but I can't find it now....

My Check Engine light is on. Looked under the hood, and a long, segmented, silvery hose that comes off the engine and runs to the bottom of the air filter is broken in half (the car is an '89 240).

1. What is this hose? I have a Haynes manual but still cannot figure out what it is. Is it expensive to replace? Can I drive safely with it broken, or can I just tape it back together?
