Eliminating Static Pops/Bursts From Radio Controls 900

I have '93 and '94 945s, both with the standard CR-814 audio unit.

For the past couple of years, both were issuing annoying and loud bursts / pops of static -- the '93, when turning on/off or adjusting volume; the '94, when adjusting balance (same control).

Both a dealer and a specialized Volvo mechanic said this was an "internal fault" and that the units needed replacing.

What BS! A fellow Brickboarder said to take out the unit, pull off the cover, and "blast the bejeezus" out of the offending control with TV Tuner cleaner. He was absolutely correct.

I followed the "Radio Removal" instructions in the 700/900 FAQ. Piece of cake. Then, I removed the BOTTOM plate from the radio (two brass screws come off the back of the unit, and the plate simply unsnaps from there). The volume/balance control is easily spotted on the inside of the unit, obviously connected the knob shaft. The component has small slotted openings; I just pointed the spray tube from the Radio Shack Tuner/Control Cleaner into these slots and gave each a quick squirt. Then I worked the knob in both directions, as well as the balance control, for a minute or so. After all had dried, I repeated the procedure for good measure.

After popping the bottom plate back on and sliding the units back in place, I find both are working/sounding great again. No need for replacement, that's for sure. By the way, while the bottom plate is off, you have great access to the cassette deck heads and rollers, so it's a good time to clean with a cotton swab and rubbing alchohol.

Saved again by the Brickboard!
