Replacing gear doesn't fix odometer

I've just replaced the little broken gear that should drive the odometers on my 1986 245DL. I used a gear I bought from www.odometers.com and the odometers still do not work.
Everything else in the instrument cluster works as it should. In fact better. The wonky temperature gauge is now pointing at 9 o'clock as Volvo intended. Has anyone else had a broken gear AND a bad driver motor? Is it possible to test the odometer driver motor? Is it possible to install the replacement gear improperly? Are there any suggestions about what to look for when I take the instrument cluster apart again?
