'91 745NA with Regina blowing fuel pump fuses inexplicably?????? 700 1991

Hello everyone,

The problem with my '91 745 B230F (~358K km/ ~224K mi) started a several weeks ago. My sister was driving it home from university on the hwy and had been driving for about an hour when the car just died. She pulled to the side of the road and the car would not restart. I came and looked at it and I couldn't hear the fuel pump, but couldn't determine the cause so I had it towed to my mechanic's. He found a broken wire and reconnected it. I took the car back and drove it ~150 km the next day (worked great). The day after that I drove it about 5 min up the road to do something on our boat at the marina. I got back in the car after about 5-10min and it started and then stalled and would not restart. I listened and heard no fuel pump, but the relay was clicking (as before). We towed it to my mechanic's again. He and I inspected it and determined that the fuel pump (Regina) needed to be replaced. He ordered a new one and installed it a few days later. I then gave the car (fuel guage had inexplicably stopped working) to a friend while his Suburban was being painted. He drove the car for a few days without problem (approx 400 km) at which point one day he got in the car drove it onto the hwy and it stopped after about 3 min of driving and wouldn't restart. He thought it had run out of gas so he got some from a nearby construction worker. After adding it the car would still not start. I had it towed to my mechanic AGAIN. He found one of the fuses for the fuel pump blown and replaced it. He took the car for a drive. After about 5-10 min of driving it blew the fuse again and stopped. He replaced the fuse and it blew again right away. He blew another one or two fuses before getting one to work. He then drove the car back ot the shop (~3 min). The next day he extraced the sending unit and inspected as much of the wiring as he could between the sending unit and the fuse panel. He could find nothing wrong. After playing with the sending unit a bit the fuel guage began to work again. The sending unit was reinstalled without connecting the filler neck and locking collar. Since then the car has been left idling for ~10 minutes on one occasion and ~30 min on another without a problem. The car has also been started and moved several times. It appears to be fine, and my mecahnic and I can find nothing wrong. I am understandably skeptical of it's reliability and I would really like to have the car to use. Does anyone know what may be wrong? Any advise or help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks in advance!
