Below you'll find a few photos of the 85 244 I brought home earlier today
and how we ended up with it.

Her body is hurting a bit with some rust, light dents and some twisted
trim as you can see in the first photo. Still a fair looking car and nice from
a short distance away. This isn't Volvo central so to see one of these
going down the street is a treat for me even if a bit rough.
The interior is truly a 9+. There are a few dash cracks and thanks to
the PO the trip counter can't be reset. No radio from the factory as far
as I can tell. My wife will die without one so I must hit the auctions or
something to find a fitting system.
The owner only had the car for a year but he's put a good deal of money
into the mechanicals. Rightly so since he appears to vacation often and
the paperwork shows about 6500 miles in 3 months. He told me he put over
30K on the car from Sept. 02 to Sept 03! I'm pretty sure the car wasn't driven
as much by it's other owners. Some of the work he did himself like a new
radiator, hoses, Autolite wires, plugs, water pump, O2 sensor and some
lighting issues.
Things beyond his ability were handled by our favorite Volvo shop in the
SLC area, Herm's Automotive (Volvos only). This work included recharging
the A/C, installing Boge struts and shocks, ball joints, new front brakes and
changing fluids in the diff. tranny and overdrive. The car cruises along on
the interstate wonderfully.
We'd been looking for a good local 240, 740 or 940 for about a month and
basically had given up. We needed to find something dependable but with
character for around $3K. We found nothing trustworthy for less than about
$8K and no Volvos of interest. All I came up with was a good 5spd Subaru for
$9K and was thinking that was going to be it. Especially with my wife's car
being gone.
We really got lucky on this one. Passed it on the side of the road while
looking for a gas station after selling my wife's sports car. Right after I told
the PO we'd take it, someone walked up interested. Another called as we
were finalizing the deal and tried to offer him more.
His asking price was $1,000 and that's what we gave him. I feel much better
now. Pretty darn happy in fact. We budgeted for $3K, migrated up from there
and then hit the jackpot in my opinion.
We're trying hard to sell expensive stuff and save money. Last month we
decided that when I retire from the AF (2+ yrs) we are going to ride touring
bicycles around the world. Something that involves much planning and some cash.
Yes we know, we're odd.
Here's two of the inside...
