How do I test O/D solenoid 700 1989

Hi All,
My O/D is not working on the auto (760gle v6 '89). When I press the o/d button, the O/d lightcomes on however at 100km, tacho reads round about 3400 rpm.

This leads me to believe that the solenoid on the auto is not working. It is quite a pricey part, is ther any way I can confirm that it is broken before I purchase replacement.
