What Kind of gas to you run in your 240? 200 1988

I have a 1988 Volvo 240 M47 that I'm wondering if I should run premium in. I get about 20-21 mpg in town and 33 on the interstate. I have been running regualar unleaded in the car and thought nothing of it unitil I ran into the previous owner of the car. He said that he only ran premium fuel in it. I'm wondering if it is at all better to run the higher octane fuel for the car. The car is in great shape and has 161000 miles on it. I plan on keeping this car for ever, so would the fuel I put in help the engene run longer, or would it just be a waste money?
