240 stalls on cornering 200

Well, my "new" 77,000 mile 1988 240 that I got last month developed its first problem. Seems that on cornering in the city the car engine stalled. So I started it again and drove about 7-8 miles when it started running rough and practically going out; I was only about a mile from home and just made it, as it stalled again turning into the driveway. What could it be? Could the gas gauge be broken and there's no gas? It shows a half a tank. I could answer that question by just taking (attempting) a run to the gas station and seeing how much gas it takes. Thoughts? Thanks, Fred
