ENGINE RUNS AGAIN! but now little charging problem 200

So I got the new valve spring in, the cam put back in, the timing set, everything put back together, cranked her over a few times, and WHOOSH! she started right up, sounding better than ever. Those of you who hate that "tick, tick, tick" noise from the egnine should replace your valve dampers--I did and it quieted things down a whole bunch. Anyways, I have one little remaining issue--when the car is running, the volts sit right around 12 now rather than around 14. The alternator is definitely charging some, but something just isn't working quite right. I replaced the brushes just a few months ago, so it's not that. I'm thinking a wiring issue is suspect, but which wires would cause this? I know people say the volvo volt meter is not very reliable, but from experience mine usually sits right in the middle of the gauge while running, and now it's just at the top of the red. Any clues would be great. thanks again!
