clunk from left rear wheel 200 1982

I am getting a fairly loud clunk that seems to emanate from the left rear wheel area. It is particularly noticeable if I lift off the throttle in third gear and then give it more gas. There will be a clunk when the throttle is lifted and then it will clunk again when the throttle is pushed back down.

It does not clunk in high gear when cruising at 100k or so and is not noticeable in acceleration from a stop.

I am wondering if the splines on the rear axle are wearing out. The car has over 250,000k on it. It is a manual transmission with the 230E engine.
