Gas Guage Malfunction on 1993 940 900

Guess I'm back with a problem. Gas guage reading has become erratic. Was reading correctly in morning. Started it to go home and it was about 1/4 lower. Reading changes slightly up or down (from this new 1/4 off reading) off and on. Reading does not change with engine speed, so probably not an instrument voltage regulator problem. All other guages read fine.

Is this indicative of a guage or a sender problem?

Found out from Volvo that the float/sender is sold only as a unit, for $425.00. Of course I will get one elsewhere if needed.
