How do you trouble a steering rack on a 240 200 1987

Gentleman and ladies

On the drivers side of my 1987 245 with 210 k miles I heard a noice and felt movement in the drivers side suspension. Ball joints tie rod ends and bushings are all new. The forum pointed me to the inner tire rod end which is stupidly did not replace but will now. I slid back the boot and can see a very small amount of movvment in the inner tie sod ball joint. What concerns we is the movement in the steering rack. When I push are on the wheel side to side I feel and can see movement accompanied with a very definate clunk in the steering rack. All steering rack mounting bolts are tight. Boots are in fine shape. From the drivers seat everyhing feels great. Front tires are wearing straight. The car racks fine on the road. How do I tell if the rack is definatly toast? Is there any adjustment in the rack? I know that I have to replace the inner tie rods. I just do not want to go in there again if I have to replace the steering rack.

Thanks

Dale
