Why do the amber side marker lights have 2 fillaments? 200 1985

Fellow Brickers,

I have had trouble sleeping lately and so I ponder things I do not understand. The latest of which is why do the amber side marker bulbs on the front of my 89 240 DL have 2 fillaments? As far as I can tell, only the smaller of the two is ever used. The light I am talking about is to the side of the headlights over the turnsignals.

Please advise. Thank you.
