Bad AMM?? 200 1990

Before I tell “my story”, I have a quick question. First thing I am going to do is clean the contacts on the AMM connector. Should I use contact cleaner and then apply dielectric (sp?) grease? Do anything else to the connector?

For the past couple of months, my car (90 244DL 227k) has had very intermittent starting problems that seemed to be solved by cleaning grounds, fuses, shaking wires etc.

Last night as I was cruising down the highway about 150 miles from home, the car begin to feel like it was going to cut out with the “check engine” light flashing briefly on. Kind of like a bad distributor or maybe an alternator. This happened a few times so I pulled over. Visually checked all connections – good – but no restart. Strong battery/cranking though. Cleaned and checked all fuses – no start. Replaced 25 amp F. I. Fuse and fuel pump relay – no start. Thought of AMM, checked connector seemed a little loose, removed connector and started right up – classic “limp home mode”. Cleaned connector up a little (some old grease), replaced and car started! Ran home better than before with no potential stalls. Problem is she is still very tough to start…

As I mentioned, I am going try the cleaning the connector first today. Thoughts anyone? No air leaks that I know of…

Bad AMM???

As background, the following are also relatively new:

Plugs
Cap
Rotor
Wires
FPR
Fuel filter
In-tank fuel pump
Sending unit

Thanks all!

Jim
