Manual Switch for Sticking Lock-Up Solenoid 900

Hooray! It works! I just used a Junkyard 740 Rocker Switch, cut the yellow lock up solenoid wire where it goes into the AT 30-43 Computer, installed the rocker switch in line on my 1992 960 Volvo. Now I can manually lockup my transmission on th ehighway or back roads and unlock it for city driving. The solenoid was sticking causing the RPM to drop to 400 and the car to shudder when coming to a stop. A guy at a Volvo dealership told me to disconnect the yellow wire at the transmission to eliminate the lockup and it works like a regular automatic. Problem is that my mileage dropped from 27-28mpg on the highway to 23-25mpg. The switch works great: improved gas mileage and by turning it off before I stop ... no shudder.

When I first posted on the list to see if anyone tried a switch someone rather sarcasticly suggested I should just replace the solenoid. Being the frugal individual I am the economics just weren't there. The solenoid which can only be purchased at Volvo lists for $278 and local transmission shops quoted $400 to install it. The car has 140,000 miles on it. If I'm lucky I may make it another 100,000. Ive' replaced the steering rack this year and already repairred rust out in the body. So if I pay $650 to replace the solenoid but only gain 3 mpg. What is my $ savings over the life of the car? you do the math.
