late shifting into overdrive after highway driving. 900 1993

After driving at highway speeds (70-80 mph) it takes more rpm's to get into overdrive. The shift gets delayed to 55-60 mph. After the car gets cold the shifting returns to normal. Could something cause the kickdown cable to not go all the way back? It does not seem to stick, but I'm not really sure. Any ideas what to check before I buy a kickdown cable?
